A Brief History

Actually this is nothing of the kind, though I intended it to be. As it turns out, I don't know the history of Energon, nor can I find a comprehensive one online. So, I'm just going to make up the bits I don't know, in the hope that some Energon fanatic will get angry enough to send me a harranguing e-mail with the REAL history of Energon in it.

Our story starts long, long ago in a whole 'nother universe. It seems some gods messed up, as they usually do, or perhaps it was rampant consumerism and technological warfare gone awry. Depends on who you ask. In any case, somehow a great battle began between the Autobots (heroic and trustworthy, but patronizing and somewhat stupid) and the Decepticons (treacherous and deadly, but much cooler-looking). Both were robotic machines that could disguise themselves as, well, um, stuff...like cars, and boom-boxes, and Jet air-planes, and sabre-toothed tigers. You know...REALLY REALLY COOL stuff. Stuff that could beat up your parents! Or at the very least ruin their hearing.

Unfortunately these robots were made of cheap plastic, unlike the sturdier Go-Bots, whose only failure was the fact they were held together by tiny little metal screws that kept coming out. If not for that, the Go-Bots most certainly could have taken the Transformers, Any Day, Any Way, Any Where, Dude, I'm not kidding!

But I'm straying from the subject, which is Energon. In this other universe, the Transformers needed Energon to live and work. They stored it in cubes or rods, mined it in its dangerously unstable crystalline form, and used it as currency. They also fought over it, or at least that's what they claimed, though there usually seemed to be plenty to go around, so my personal theory is they were fighting on principle. Or in other words, because they wanted to. This is why I never really got into watching the telev...ahem...mystical rectangular universe viewer portal. Also, I preferred the universes that were animated at more than 8 frames per second.

In more recent years, the word Energon (along with just about every other made-up word) has been appropriated by some scientist (Hans Hass) to mean something completely other than its original meaning. In this case, it is a general term for something able to effect its environment, (plants, animals, professionals, and organisations). Energon theory talks mainly about the ways in which these effects are limited and why this could suck a great deal, especially for Europe.
